RPG Australia supplies heavy steel components to the steel fabrication, engineering, construction and manufacturing industries, so it is used to challenging projects. But fabricating, constructing and installing a ship and submarine lift and transfer mechanism, using 2,800 tonnes of XLERPLATE® steel, kept both RPG and BlueScope Steel on their toes.

The project was comprised of three key elements: a working platform, 40 hoists to lift the platform and a transfer system to allow the ships to be moved on and off the platform.

XLERPLATE® steel was used in the main transverse beams of the shiplift platform structure; the bedplate (frame) and drums of the hoists; and the trestles and trolleys on the transfer system.

RPG submitted a schedule nominating when XLERPLATE® steel was required. "BlueScope supplied on time to our requirements and the manufacture schedule was maintained," said Contract Manager, Peter Hall.
